An 18-year-old was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the murder of Ramiro Alvarado in December 2024, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Jay Robert Rangel was convicted of murder and six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon by a jury two months ago, the DA’s office said.
In December 2024, Rangel, who was 16 years old at the time, and a group of friends arrived at Alvarado’s girlfriends home. Alvarado and his girlfriend were both inside.
Rangel and the group of friends had an ongoing dispute with Alvarado’s girlfriend’s brother, who was the initial target.
The DA’s office said the group began making threats and displayed weapons at the home.
Surveillance video shows Rangel running into the alley behind the home before firing several shots through the back door, where Alvarado and his girlfriend’s family tried to escape, striking Alvarado in the heart, the DA’s office said.
A judge certified Rangel to stand in trial as an adult due to the severity of the offense.
Rangel was given a 20-year sentence for six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which will be served the same time as his murder sentence.
